Below is the step by step approach to using the subtitles efficiently
I use soft subtitles so that you can watch the episode in plain japanese or with subtitles.

THESE STEPS BELOW ARE A ONE TIME ONLY INSTALLATION

Step 1. Download and Install CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack [Latest Verison])

Step 1A. When installing
i)Sometimes is may ask to disable features eg. Morgan Stream Switcher on you computer, please do, unless you can work around it.

ii)First Screen after disable warnings, press "Next"

iii)Choose appropriate setup folder - the default is good

iv)Choose the Full Installation. Click Next

v)Next once more

viCheck all options on this screen. Hit Next

vii) Now Hit Install.
Once the Install is completed I recommend you use Windows Media Player. It uses all the Filters, Codecs, Decoders and Encoders in a very integrated fashion.


Step 1B. After installing (Tweaking your settings)
i)Go to your Start Menu, and find Combined Community Codec Pack and then enter the "Settings"

ii)Check everything on this screen except "Generic MPEG4" (Leave it unchecked) and then Click "Next"

iii)Check all options EXCEPT "Reset All Setting" in this screen and leave the drop down menus as "NO CHANGE". Make sure to re-register filters by checking the option under special settings in this window. Hit Apply.

Step 2. Play the file (preferably on "Windows Media Player" or "Media Player Classic" (Media Player Classic is provided with the CCCP installation).

Step 2A. Enabling the subtitles.
i)Once the file starts to play there will be a number of small icons (filters) loaded up in your Tray Area or your Start Bar. The icons that you should look out for are:
-A small Green Arrow (VobSub) - right click on this and make sure "Show Subtitles" is checked (a small tick sign next to it) and "S: [Undetermined] is also ticked/enabled. This would allow the subtitles to be shown,

-Also alternatively there is also another Icon, a white icon with an Omega sign in it (shaped like a broken circle with two horizontal lines protruding from the bottom ends). This is called Haali Media Splitter (which you enabled in the CCCP "Settings"). Choose "S:[Undetermined] and you subtitles should also show up.

ii) Enjoy your Soft Subtitled Episode

VLC Player doesn't use the CCCP it has it's own built in filters, encoders and decoders. Good player but for only Hard Subbed videos and external subtitle files.
