Jeff Porcaro had all the class and finesse that almost every other drummer lacks. His tragic, accidental death left a huge void in the LA session scene and in the band Toto, that will never be filled, for he was everybody's first call. David Garfield, musical collaborator and friend has assembled a huge and inspiring line-up of musicians; all of whom were friends of Jeff at some time, as well as Jeff's own family. The choice of tracks is careful and delicate; a fine tribute to Jeff's superb shuffle groove with 'E minor Shuffle', which has the chorus line from Steely Dan's 'Black Friday'; to remind us where Jeff first displayed his perfect feel for time and groove. Every song reflects eiher an aspect of his personality or his playing; for instance, his love for Hendrix and Mowtown, as well as the roots of his influence, in a brilliant sneaky instrumental version of 'Babylon Sisters', where Jeff got the idea for the 'Rosanna' groove. Bernard Purdie plays on this, as he did on the original what Jef always called 'The Bernard Purdie Halftime Shuffle.' Other highlights include a scintillating version of Boz Scagg's 'Lowdown' again without lyrics, and the heart rending, deeply personal ballad, 'My Heart Wants to Know'; written especially for Jeff by his friends. There is a story behind each track, too long to elaborate here, but overall this is not only fine musicianship, and a wonderful tribute to a great drummer, but a fine example of the beauty of family and friendship.
