Un vaisseau spatial transportant une quarantaine de civils est percuté par une météorite et se crashe sur une planète inconnue. Les membres de l'équipage périssent dans l'accident, à l'exception de Fry, une jeune pilote, et de quelques survivants. Parmi eux, un imam et ses disciples, un antiquaire, une géologue, une adolescente, le chasseur de Johns et Riddick, un criminel endurci en cours de transfert vers sa prison. Alors que le petit groupe tente de s'organiser sous un climat aride de jour perpétuel dominé par trois soleils, ils découvrent qu'une éclipse va bientôt frapper la planète, permettant à de monstrueuses créatures nocturnes de se mettre en chasse...
