Keith Floyd
Keith Floyd is the star of a score of cooking shows and the author of more than 25 books.
Educated at Wellington school in Somerset, Keith Floyd went on to pursue a career in journalism. However, after seeing the film Zulu, his planned changed and he a stint in the army. The next step on his checkered career path was an entry into catering where he worked as a dishwasher, vegetable peeler and barman.
Keith developed a taste for fine food and wine, and in the early seventies he took over three Bristol restaurants. When this venture met financial problems, Keith sold his eponymous chain and moved to France, then London to continue trying his hand at being a restaurateur.
Keith published his first book, Floyd's Food as the beginning of his career in show business. He began as a radio chef on Radio West then moved on to television.
Pioneering TV Chef
Keith Floyd was the first British TV chef to take cooking out of the studio and into the real world of food producers, markets, and cooks.His enthusiasm for the quality and provenance of food has been cited as a major influence on Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall amongst others.
His flamboyant on-screen persona has mirrored a turbulent life of travel and multiple business failures, which are detailed in his book Out of the Frying Pan. His shows featured the first TV appearances of Rick Stein and Gary Rhodes, both then largely unknown.
Starting with Floyd on Fish, his later series focussed on the cuisines of many countries and regions including France, Britain and Ireland, Italy, America, Spain, India, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australia. Floyd has now retired from TV, and while still writing food related books he says he will never write another cookbook - the need to formalise recipes being anathema to his intuitive cooking style and an underestimation of his readers' cooking skills.
His latest business venture is Floyd's Brasserie, a restaurant in Phuket, Thailand, and when not overseeing that project he lives quietly in the Rhone Valley, France, and Oxfordshire, England.
