LINER NOTES

Like many good musical expressions, soul rose out of the South. It pervaded black consciousness and spread to all the brothers and sisters. It was sung from the heart, it was an expression of years, nay gen¬erations of oppression and hardships, but it wasn't the blues. No, there was hope of a new day dawning. Soul was a feeling that dawned in the early sixties and was a phenomenon of that decade.
In New Orleans the likes of Benny Spellman, Ernie K-Doe and Aaron Neville added that certain 'je ne sais quoi', that epitomises all music from the Crescent City.
In Chicago Billy Stewart imbued soul into a Gershwin tune.
Sugar Pie DeSanto donned a soulful dress.
Former Drifters' lead singer and rock 'n' roller, Jackie Wilson slipped easily into soul and went ever higher and higher.
Percy Sledge proved that soul has lasting properties with 'When A Man Loves A Woman', whilst Timi Yuro provided one of the most soulful performances on 'Hurt', before the term 'soul' had even been heard of.
The music traverses the States geographically taking in New Orleans, Memphis, Muscle Shoals, Chicago, and New York all produced great soul recordings. The artists you get to hear on this collection are all prime exponents of soul, so sit back, listen, enjoy but above all remember one monkey don't stop no show.
