Description

Library disc. Had to remove the labels. No picture of the cover of this old ADD recording can be found on the Internet.

Though not performed on authentic instruments, this recording is just beautiful and brings out Seixas' genius. Seixas still doesn't seem to have the recognition he deserves which seems to be partly due to the fact that the majority of his works got destroyed during the Lisbonian earthquake in 1755. The booklet says that a contemporary of his mentions over 700 keyboard compositions by him (compare to Scarlattis ca. 555 keyboard compositions), of which only about a 100 Sonatas are known today (I think they discovered about 80 more, new pieces lately). He's often considered to be Scarlatti's "pupil", but that assessment does him no justice as he got his very personal, original style, even if Scarlatti's influence can be heard at times. This Portuguese genius didn't grow old either. He got 38 years old only!

The second harpsichord concerto is by an unknown composer and got distinct "Spanish" elements, especially the last track that sounds like some of Soler's sonatas.

PS: There is yet another Seixas CD with the same harpsichord concerto and sinfonia performed by the Norwegian Baroque Orchestra (on authentic instruments), with several of Seixas' keyboard sonatas added, played by Ketil Haugsand. That CD probably coming up here soon. Strangely, I prefer this older recording here, performed with modern instruments, over the one with authentic instruments. It seems to bring out somewhat better Seixas' originality.
