British Politics after Margaret Thatcher getting even dirtier
in this satirical thriller BBC miniseries (source unknown):
After Series like 'Yes (Prime)Minister' with a satirical yet
mainly playful look at the British System of Government or
the crude and less insightful pranky 'The New Statesman' (all
available at www.digitaldistractions.org in the 'British
Comedies' section) this satirical thriller is a new take on
the foulness of the political game, more like an adapted
MacBeth of modern times.
The 'House of Cards' Trilogy consists of 3 parts each composed
of 4 episodes. It is based on books by Michael Dobbs, a former
British politician who had inside knowledge from his time in
the Conservative party.
In the 1st Part of 'House of Cards' Conservative Chief Whip
Francis Urquhart is disappointed when after backing Henry
Collingridge to replace Margaret Thatcher as Prime Minister he
is not rewarded with a post in the new cabinet.
So Urquhart starts his underhand Macchiavellian game to become
his political masters successor as soon as possible. Nothing
is to criminal for him to refrain in order to clear his way to
the top from impeding obstacles.
In Part 2 (To Play the King) Urquhart is at odds with the new
king who fells that Britain should be less icy in terms of
social policies. And Urquhart's closest aids loose his trust
and pay a heavy price.
In Part 3 (The Final Cut) Urquhart is still Prime Minister but
there is enough resentment in the party itself to get rid of him,
or is there?
In any case his former Foreign Secretary who has just resigned is
dead set on challenging his leadership and seems to have some
knowledge of Urquhart's mirky past on Cyprus as a young officer
when two native adolescents were shot under very suspicious
circumstances.
But Urquhart will not be defeated without fighting tooth and nail.
