This new album is more slow-paced than their previous work but has more of an epic feel. In 2007, Wizards\' Hymn changed their vocalist to YuSa and Junichi Ohtsuka (Keyboard) joined the band as a support member in preparation for this album.
Wizards\' Hymn, released their second album \"Transience\" in May 2008. Unlike their first album, \"Hymnal\", this new album shows a change in the band\'s direction on a musical scale towards \"Neo-Japanesque(?)Rock/Metal\". Their new album also highlights the talent that some of their new members have contributed to the band.
The album has a great start with the riveting track titled \"Remains\". Right away fans will be sure to notice the dramatic change in the musical composition. \"Remains\" starts off with a traditional Asian melody supported by keyboard, and quickly transitions into a powerful drum and guitar led tune. What is so striking about this tune is the harmony and complexity of the composition. This song reflects a tremendous growth within the band and a strong symphonic influence.
This growth is continuously shown throughout the remainder of the album. As you listen, you can imagine the methodical thought that went into composing each song. The keyboard, guitar, and drums are in perfect harmony, crescendoing at the right points in each song to create emotion and drama. In addition, the keyboard and guitar solos featured in songs like \"Hindsight\" and \"Wake in Dreamland\" are spectacular, pulling the listener into the songs. Not enough can be said about the composition of this album. On a musical level, this album shows a wonderful creative genious and inventiveness that is often lacking from mainstream artists.
On a small note, many fans will appreciate that the band chose to write their lyrics in English. Their lyrics show a great deal of philosophical thought and range from discussing love to mortality and transience.
The one criticism I have towards this album is the vocals. On a whole, the vocals are weak at times, being overpowered by the instruments playing in the background. Yusa often tries to sing in the higher octaves, but looses that powerful quality in her voice that commands and grasps your attention. On songs like \"Anytime\", her vocals sound much better because she stays in the lower octaves and maintains a sense of command and emotion.
Overall this is a great album. It features some wonderful symphonic melodies and shows an incredible growth in Wizards\' Hymn musical abilities.
