"The earliest reference of the use of a windmill, we are told, was made by Antipater of Thessalonica 65 years before the birth of Christ. Men had used the wind to propel boats, of course, long before that. In addition, to a timeline and bibliography, this 1,000-page, 3-volume encyclopedia contains many good plain-language expositions of the history and technology of our use of energy, plus 60 biographies. The section on Hybrid vehicles provides a good understanding of the operation of the two such automobiles now on the market. The section on "Aircraft" is a pretty good short course on aerodynamics. The editor of the encyclopedia himself produced an interesting section on batteries. A compilation of the work fo 100 different authors will not be uniform; some of these articles are much better than others. On the whole, however, this is a very readable and valuable reference."
