Time passes. Fans, historians and, yes, even record companies have started looking at Fifties Rock 'n' Roll as if it were one thing. Vocal groups, honkers and shouters from roadhouse R&B bands, hillbillies, rockabillies, wannabillies—they’re all called Rock 'n' Roll now. Then sociologists get into the act and confuse it by babbling on about kids with more spending money. Natural teenage rebellion plus more spending money equals Rock 'n' Roll in their books. The hardcore fans, the ones who still put grease in what's left of their hair, say that Rock 'n' Roll was born the day Bill Haley recorded "Rock Around The Clock" and died the night that Buddy Holly's plane ploughed into a frozen Iowa cornfield.
What are we to make of all this? Can we reduce something as unwieldy and sprawling as Fifties Rock 'n' Roll to such simple terms as birth and death dates? Did the earth move the afternoon that. Bill Haley cut "Rock Around The Clock"? What went into the stew that became known as Rock 'n' Roll? Was it that much different from what came before? And if so, how?
This collection is a little history lesson. Enjoyable, even danceable -just like history in school. If we read between the bar lines, the first generation of Rock 'n' Rollers will tell us about where it all came from. Where it's going is anyone's guess………
